In this simple 2-3 octave setting Cynthia Dobrinski unites two hymns of the cross, Near the Cross and Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed, utilizing reharmonization, melody in treble and bass clef accompaniment. A transition builds to a final triumphant verse of Near the Cross, which finishes with a fortissimo coda. Though the chime changes are minimal, this arrangement is harmonically rich and sounds more difficult than it is.
